A Patriotic Celebration

Visitors to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park marked Independence Day with a series of special programs titled 'Forging Freedom.' Despite early morning rain, the event successfully showcased the traditions, craftsmanship, and history that helped shape both Appalachia and the United States.

Living History Exhibits

The program featured living historians who demonstrated the use of Civil War and Revolutionary War-era weapons, providing an immersive experience for attendees. Other popular activities included demonstrations of traditional loom weaving and games common to the late 1700s, such as whirligigs and ring toss, which were popular with families and children.

Honoring the Past

In addition to the historical demonstrations, the park displayed all 50 current state flags in front of the visitor center. The event served as a reminder of the historical significance of the Cumberland Gap as a gateway for early settlers, continuing the park's mission to preserve and share the cultural heritage of the region.
