A Pause on Development
On June 26, 2026, the Bell County Fiscal Court officially approved a two-year moratorium on the construction and operation of data centers within the county. The decision followed an overflowing public meeting where over 30 citizens voiced concerns regarding a proposed project on Jellical Mine Road.
Community Concerns
Local residents expressed fears that large-scale data centers could negatively impact property values, noise levels, and local water availability. Many speakers highlighted the proximity of the proposed sites to residential areas and family farms, prompting officials to prioritize citizen feedback and long-term land-use planning.
Purpose of the Moratorium
The moratorium, which takes effect immediately, is designed to provide local leadership and stakeholders the necessary time to evaluate the potential environmental and economic impacts of such facilities. County Judge Executive David Blackburn emphasized that the pause will allow the county to update its policies and regulations, ensuring any future development aligns with the best interests of Bell County residents.
