The Wilderness Road isn't just a historic trail — it's a living path through some of Kentucky's most beautiful landscape. Blazed by Daniel Boone in 1775, this route opened the western frontier and today offers hikers a chance to walk in the footsteps of pioneers.

Trail Overview

Portions of the historic route wind through Cumberland Gap National Historical Park near Middlesboro. Trails range from gentle forest paths suitable for families to rugged ridgeline routes that challenge experienced hikers.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy hiking boots
  • Plenty of water
  • A trail map (cell service is spotty)
  • Camera for the overlooks
  • Insect repellent in warmer months

Best Times to Hike

Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers and comfortable temperatures. Fall (October) is the standout season — the Appalachian foliage paints the hills in reds, oranges, and golds. Summer hikes are best started early morning to avoid heat.

Scenic Overlooks

The ridgetop views of the Appalachian foothills are the highlight. On clear days, you can see for miles across Bell County's forested terrain. Several interpretive signs along the corridor tell the story of Boone's expedition and pioneer life.

Getting There

The trail is accessible from Middlesboro via US-25E, with multiple entry points into Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Stop by the visitor center for current trail conditions before heading out.
